Our little sweetie is 4 months old! Where has the time gone?! After 4 months, I finally sorta feel like we are kinda getting into the swing of things with two kids...somewhat. yes, that's right....sorta, kinda, somewhat - ha! No, things ARE good despite our feeding/nursing issues and toddler tantrums. I am cherishing these days at home with my two little ones and thanking God for them!
At 4 months (and one week) old....
* Aubrey weighs 12 lbs 4 oz (~ 20th %tile) and is 24 1/2 inches long (50th %tile). Her head circumfrence is 15 inches (2nd %tile). She did drop a little in weight since her 2-month well-child (25th to 20th) but she is still a healthy little girl! (who still has one roll on each thigh, ha!)
* We just switched her to size 2 diapers. She is still wearing 3 month sizes (or 0-3 months) and now some 3-6 month sizes in some brands.
* She is still just eating about 4oz (sometimes 5oz) per feeding, 6 times a day. According to her weight and the "suggested" intake, she should be eating around 30oz a day but most times, I just cannot get her to eat more than 4oz per feeding. The exceptions would be the first morning feeding and when I wake her up to feed her around midnight. Those are really the only two times when she will often take 5oz.
* Our newest nursing challenge is that she will almost always just nurse for about 10 minutes on one side and then refuse to nurse anymore. And it's not just one side in particular, she does this even when I start off on the opposite side....and it's almost every time I feed her (we've been dealing with this for a couple weeks now). I don't know if it's because she gets distracted or lazy or tired or what! I have noticed that she does better when it is quiet (not always, but it can help) and well, our house is just not a quiet place with a loud, rambunctious 2-year-old BOY! So, I will nurse her for however long she'll nurse and then have to give her the rest from a bottle (from what I have previously pumped). It's crazy how much time I spend trying to feed her and pump! Right now, I am REALLY trying to make it to at least 6 months and then re-evaluate whether or not I can continue nursing her. It is just a LOT of extra work and takes up a lot of my day. I feel bad for it taking time away from Caleb, but then I will feel bad if I stop nursing her knowing that I am producing what she needs. I'm torn!!
* She's still sleeping 7-8 hours at night. She goes to bed between 9-10pm, but I do wake her up to feed her again around midnight b/c I still want her to get 6 feedings in. So, technically she is really sleeping more like 9-10 hours or so b/c she really doesn't wake up too much when I feed her at midnight. If I could get her to take in more per feeding during the day, I'd try skipping the midnight feeding but just not ready for that yet. We're night owls anyway, so I don't mind staying up til midnight to feed her, especially since she goes right back down without a peep. Oh, and to make it a little easier, I just pump and give her a bottle for the last feeding so I don't have to weigh her and do all that mumbo jumbo and potentially wake her up!
* We're on a pretty good "eat, wake, sleep" routine and she still naps after every feeding. She will usually only stay awake and happy for an hour and fifteen minutes up to an hour and a half....then she's ready for a nap! She starts getting fussy and sucks her thumb and/or rubs her eyes. If she's laying on the floor, she will roll to her side and start sucking her thumb (and sometimes she tries to just go to sleep on the floor!) After her next to last feeding, she usually doesn't stay up as long because it's late and she's tired and ready for bed.
* She is holding her head up really well when on her tummy, although she doesn't like being on her tummy for too long yet. She'll last 5-10 minutes (usually more like 5!) and then she gets fussy. I remember Caleb being the same way - took him a while before he was ok with being on his tummy. The first night she really started lifting her head up, Rhett was at a class (for work) and Caleb was in bed, so I had the TV on the CMA's and was just kinda halfway watching/listening. I put Aubrey on the ottoman facing towards the TV (unintentionally) and she lifted her head right up and just stared at the TV! I guess the flashing lights and music got her!
* Although this was after her 4-month bday, I'll go ahead and include it.....she rolled from back to tummy for the first time on my birthday, 12/2! I don't think she did it intentionally, though. When you put her down to sleep, she always rolls to her right side and falls asleep that way. We had just gotten home from our Sunday school Christmas party and I put her down like normal and she rolled to her side. After a few minutes, I heard her "talking" and looked at the monitor and she had rolled all the way over to her tummy! She hasn't done it since and I have not even seen her try to do it, so not sure what made her do it this particular time. (and not sure if I've documented this...too lazy to go back and look....but she can roll from tummy to back pretty easily)
* She loves to sit and stand (assisted, of course) and look around. I think she prefers it to being on the floor. I do sit her in the Bumbo on occassion but she still kinda slumps to the side and doesn't usually like being in it for too long. She has really good head control but still slumps, so I guess it isn't all that comfortable.
* When she gets really excited, she kicks her legs and makes a panting sound. Too cute!
* We don't quite understand her bowel habits - ha! She'll go for 2-3 days w/o going #2 and then you can tell her tummy gets upset. She won't eat as well and just seems uncomfortable. Then, she'll finally go and all is well. Sometimes she won't go for a couple/few days and then she'll go several times in one day. Why can't she just be regular?! Peeing, on the other hand, is her specialty - that girl can soak some diapers!
* If you put something right in front of her, she will make an attempt to grab it. She's not very coordinated yet so she's not always successful but you can tell she is trying. It does have to be right in front of her, though...she hasn't started reaching out yet.
* She still doesn't cry much and she rarely wakes up crying....she usually just starts talking and that's how you know she's awake.
* She experienced her first Halloween AND her first Thanksgiving! For Halloween, we went to First Fest at church and she pretty much slept the whole time we were there. For Thanksgiving, both of our families came over to spend the day at our house. She wasn't crazy about the loud crowd of people, though, and seemed pretty overwhelmed. Next up....her first Christmas!
* She really is a good baby and such a sweet girl. It doesn't take much to make her smile at you and my favorite thing about her smile is when she sticks her tongue out when she does it - too cute!
And apparently I didn't take many pictures of Aubrey this month. :-( This is all I have....
watching her mobile
siting in the Bumbo for the first time, watching brother eat (this is a good view of her giant bald spot - ha!)
sweet {chubby} cheeks!
I think she was getting tired of the Bumbo at this point...
she will latch on to toys that you put in front of her...
stare down with the crinkly elephant...
